With Inflation Still Running Hot Social Security Recipients Could Get $1900 Boost Next Year
Older American and others on Social Security could get a significant bump in their annual cost-of-living adjustment next year, with experts forecasting that the typical recipient could receive an additional $1,900 in 2023 to keep up with inflation.
Many seniors have struggled this year as their 2022 bump, 5.9%, lagged the hottest inflation in 40 years. Consumer prices cooled in July as gasoline prices dropped, but inflation remains scorching hot up 8.5% from a year ago.
The Social Security Administration bases its annual COLA adjustment on inflation data from July, August and September, with the agency announcing its official hike in mid-October. With data now available for one of those three months, seniors could see an average monthly increase of 9.6%, according to the Senior Citizens League. If inflation continues to ease, seniors could finally get a break in 2023 and close the benefits gap that many are now experiencing.
Based on the average monthly benefit of $1,656 in 2022, a 9.6% boost would amount to a monthly gain of about $159 and an annual gain of $1,900, the nonpartisan group said.
Johnson said she expects the Social Security Administration to announce the COLA on October 13, following the release of September inflation data.
The CPI-W increased 9.1% in July, the Labor Department said on Wednesday.

Former Federal Officer Sentenced For Stealing Social Security Benefits
Miami, Florida On January 31, 2022, a former federal law enforcement officer was sentenced for stealing over $75,000 in social security benefits paid to his deceased father while serving as a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Officer in Miami.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Carlos Avila, 54, of Pembroke Pines, was collecting and receiving Social Security Retirement Insurance Benefits for his father, who died in Ecuador in 2010. Because the Social Security Administration was unaware that Avilas father died, the benefit payments did not stop. Over the course of the next nine years, Avila controlled his deceased fathers bank account so that Avila could continue to withdraw the monthly overpayment of benefits that the SSA intended for his father while he was alive. Even after a temporary payment freeze due to internal checks that indicated Avilas father was no longer alive, Avila again updated his fathers bank account address seven years after his death and caused the SSA to release a back payment of $22,074, which Avila quickly spent. Avila was sentenced to six months imprisonment , one year of probation, and mandatory restitution.
U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Rodregas W. Owens of the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General , Atlanta Field Division made the announcement.
