Federal Benefit Payments Automatic No Action For Most

Social Security Office Are Opening – 6 things to know before you go

Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and recipients of veterans benefits who are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment do not need to take any action to receive a payment. These payments will be automatic. Like the previous Economic Impact Payments, Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way that they receive their regular benefits.

Some federal benefit recipients may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they donât usually file, to provide information the IRS needs to send payments for any qualified dependent. Eligible individuals in this group should file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional payment for their qualified dependent as quickly as possible.

Social Security Offices Will Open To The Public April 7 No Appointment Required

The Social Security Administration finally released a date that its field offices will reopen to the public after closing a year-and-a-half ago during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Find: Social Security Offices How Can I Find One Near Me?

Social Security offices will restore in-person services on Thursday, April 7, including for people without an appointment, SSA Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi said in a statement on Monday.

Because of an expected rush of visitors when offices reopen, the SSA still strongly encourages people to use online services whenever possible. And even though you dont need an appointment to get in-person service, youre also strongly encouraged to schedule one to avoid waiting in a long line.

Customers who walk in without appointments may encounter delays and longer waits at our offices, Kijakazi said. Be aware that our offices tend to be the busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week and during the early part of the month, so people may want to plan to visit at other times.

The SSA will also continue to require safety measures such as masking, physical distancing and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms. The agency will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

You can create a personalized my Social Security account on the SSA.gov website. Many Social Security services are also available by dialing 18007721213 .

Like our offices, our waits are generally shorter later in the week and later in the month.

Second stimulus checks. The IRS started sending second stimulus payments to SSDI and SSI recipients in early January. If you havenât received your second payment, you can create an account on the IRS website to get information on the first and second payments. You should be able to see where the payments were deposited or when they were mailed. The IRS says it may take three or four weeks to get the payment by mail.

Help With Social Security Number

Just like with benefit issues, getting an appointment for help with your Social Security number has a priority system as well. These appointments are reserved for people age 12 and over who are getting their first Social Security card or need to update information related to their Social Security number such as a name change or citizenship status change. These people may also be unwilling or unable to mail original documents. For example, you might not want to mail your original birth certificate or drivers license to prove your identity on your application. So, you could make an appointment to accomplish this. Simply requesting a replacement card is not enough to warrant an appointment in most cases. Replacement Social Security cards can be requested online as well as replacement Medicare cards.

Are Social Security Offices Open On Black Friday

Its rare that a shopping holiday influences office closures outside its industry, but you cant underestimate the power and allure of Black Friday. While shoppers will be in retail heaven on Nov. 25, those requiring the services of the Social Security Administration in person will be out of luck.

Social Security Offices Will Reopen For First Time Since March 2020

The U.S. Social Security Administration’s main offices

Social Security offices have been closed nationwide since March 17, 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they will reopen Thursday, April 7.

The Social Security Administration announced the news on Monday, April 4, via a statement from Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi.

Given that many of the people we serve have health vulnerabilities, and consistent with our union agreements, we are continuing to require certain safety measures including masking, physical distancing, and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms, Kijakazi said in the statement. We will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

Kijakazi recommends people use the SSAs online services at ssa.gov/onlineservices or call toll free at 1-800-772-1213 instead of going into offices, if possible. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can call the TTY number at 1-800-325-0778.

For those wanting to go to the offices, appointments arent required but are strongly encouraged. They can be made online or via the phone number above.

Offices tend to be busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week and early in the month, Kijakazi said.

Michigan has 36 Social Security Administration offices in the following areas.

Theres Good Reason For Social Security Offices To Open Asap

That being said, reopening Social Security offices as soon as possible needs to be considered a priority. While services are available via the phone, that doesnt help much unless you have a good computer with a strong internet connection in your own home.

The continued closure of Social Security offices under most circumstances does present a major challenge to the hundreds of thousands of individuals who may lack access to a computer, internet connection, or dont have a reliable phone number or mailing address.

The decreased lack of access to the local SSA offices has been blamed for the decrease in Social Security benefits applications. Since the closure of offices, newly awarded SSI applications are down 30%.

Critics of the SSA office closures say that this is a sign of a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable population: those with low income and disabilities.

When Will Social Security Offices Open Again?

Unfortunately, the real answer to When will Social Security offices open again? may be never, at least in some cases. A permanent closing of most of these offices could be the eventual outcome, even as the pandemic fades into the rearview mirror.

This could become even more likely if a proposal from one of the big Social Security employees unions gets their way.
