Documents Required To Obtain A Social Security Card

Four times you shouldnt give out your Social Security number

Applying for Social Security benefits usually assumes that you already have a Social Security card. So, what do you need to get a Social Security card? The answer often depends on whether you simply need a replacement or you need to apply for your first card. Getting a replacement Social Security card is usually pretty easy. You can request a replacement online as long as you are not performing a name change or changing any information on your card. Simply log into your My Social Security account at SSA.gov and request a replacement. Note that a handful of states do not allow online replacement requests.

If you need to change your name or you live in a state that does not allow online replacement requests, you should complete Form SS-5 to request a Social Security card. This is the same form used for initial card requests as well. To complete your request for a replacement, you will need to provide proof of your identity, like a drivers license. For a new card request, you will need proof of identity and citizenship status. You will also need to provide your birth certificate to prove your age. If you have any questions about the required documents, you can call the Social Security Administration toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.

Old Age Survivors And Disability

SSA administers the retirement, survivors, and disabled social insurance programs, which can provide monthly benefits to aged or disabled workers, their spouses and children, and to the survivors of insured workers. In 2010, more than 54 million Americans received approximately $712 billion in Social Security benefits. The programs are primarily financed by taxes which employers, employees, and the self-insured pay annually. These revenues are placed into a special trust fund. These programs are collectively known as Retirement, Survivors, Disability Insurance .

SSA administers its disability program partly through its Office of Disability Adjudication and Review , which has regional offices and hearing offices across the United States. ODAR publishes a manual, called HALLEX, which contains instructions for its employees regarding how to implement its guiding principles and procedures.

The RSDI program is the primary benefits program administered by the U.S. federal government, and for some beneficiaries is the vital source of income. Increasing access to this benefit program for low-income or homeless individuals is one of SSA’s goals. SSA is a member of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness and works with other municipal, county, state, local and federal partners to increase access and approval for SSI/SSDI benefits who are eligible.

Ssns Used In Advertising

Some SSNs used in advertising have rendered those numbers invalid. One famous instance of this occurred in 1938 when the E. H. Ferree Company in Lockport, New York, decided to promote its product by showing how a Social Security card would fit into its wallets. A sample card, used for display purposes, was placed in each wallet, which was sold by Woolworth and other department stores across the country the wallet manufacturer’s vice president and treasurer Douglas Patterson used the actual SSN of his secretary, Hilda Schrader Whitcher.

Even though the card was printed in red and had “specimen” printed across the front, many people used Whitcher’s SSN as their own. The Social Security Administration’s account of the incident also claims that the fake card was half the size of a real card, despite a miniature card being useless for its purpose and despite Whitcher’s holding two cards of apparently identical size in the accompanying photograph. Over time, the number that appeared has been claimed by a total of over 40,000 people as their own. The SSA initiated an advertising campaign stating that it was incorrect to use the number . However, the number was found to be in use by 12 individuals as late as 1977.

More recently, Todd Davis distributed his SSN in advertisements for his company’s LifeLock identity theft protection service, which allowed his identity to be stolen over a dozen times.

    What Is Social Security

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.

When you sign in to your online account, you’ll be able to view your Social Security statements. If you don’t yet receive benefits, you’ll see an estimate of the amount you could receive when you do retire.

There’s a table that shows your monthly benefit amounts if you retire — for instance, if you were born in 1960 or later, your chart may show retirement at 62 years old , 67 years old and 70 years old . Note that these retirement ages may change in the future. The longer you wait to retire, the more money you could receive per month.

You can also see your eligibility and earnings information. If you’ve worked at least 10 years, you’ll have enough work credits — you need 40 — to receive benefits. If you click on Review your Earnings Record, you’ll see your taxed Social Security and Medicare earnings for each year you worked.

Social Security Card Or Social Security Number

This requirement should be pretty obvious. You will need to provide your SSN to the Social Security Administration when you apply for benefits. Your Social Security number is used by the SSA to track your earnings record, and this record will determine the amount of your benefit payments each month. Although sometimes just knowing your Social Security number will suffice, there might be other instances where you need to provide your SSN card.

If you have lost your Social Security card, you can request a replacement card from the Social Security Administration. If you have a My Social Security account, you can request your replacement online. You should know that there are a handful of states that do not allow online replacement requests, so you will need to visit your local Social Security office to get a replacement in that case. Replacement requests typically take a couple of weeks to process, and you should receive your new card in the mail at your home address.

When You’ll Need A Social Security Administration Routing Number

Youll also need it when you file taxes to receive your tax refund or debit a tax payment, or when you conduct Automated Clearing House , transfers between different bank accounts.

Generally, you’ll only need your routing number when funds are being directly transferred to or from your bank account never for debit card or credit card purchases.

How Are Swift / Bic Codes Ibans Sort Codes And Routing Numbers Different

If you’re planning to send or receive money through your bank, you will likely come across unfamiliar terms such as routing number , SWIFT / BIC code, IBAN, and sort code. What exactly are these acronyms, and what are they used for? Well, all of them seemingly do much of the same thing which is to help banks identify where your money needs to go when being transferred, but each is required in specific situations because different countries and banks have different processes and requirements.

SWIFT / BIC codes are 8 or 11-digit codes that uniquely identify banks and financial institutions worldwide. Unlike routing numbers, these codes are used for international payments.

IBANs are international bank account numbers that identify the country, financial institution, and individual bank accounts. They’re mainly issued by banks in the Eurozone, but other countries are starting to adopt them as well.

Sort Codes are 6-digit numbers used for domestic transfers in the United Kingdom which identify the bank and the branch where a bank account is held.

Routing numbers are 9-digit codes used in the US to identify banks when processing domestic ACH payments or wire transfers. These are not required when making payments outside the United States.

Transit numbers are 9-digit codes used in Canada for electronic funds transfers. They identify a specific Canadian bank and branch where a payment will be sent.

    Types Of Social Security Cards

Four different classifications of Social Security cards are issued. Such cards are issued by geographic location to:

  • persons of natural birth within the territorial boundaries of any one of the member States of the United States of America
  • persons who become U.S. citizens by oath, or birth within the exclusive legislative or territorial jurisdiction of the U.S. government
  • persons who become U.S. permanent residents
  • persons with certain restrictions.
  • There are two restricted types of Social Security cards:

    • One reads “not valid for employment.” Such cards cannot be used as proof of work authorization, and are not acceptable as a List C document on the I-9 form.
    • The other reads “valid for work only with DHS authorization”, or the older, “valid for work only with INS authorization.” These cards are issued to people who have temporary work authorization in the U.S from the Department of Homeland Security — the nation’s border agency. They can satisfy the I-9 requirement, if they are accompanied by a work authorization card.

The cards commonly display the cardholder’s name and number.

The new SSN card design utilizes both covert and overt security features created by the SSA and GPO design teams.
