When Will I Receive My Cola Letter
The Social Security Administration told CNET that it’s sending out letters in the mail throughout the month of December. That means your notice could already be on the way or may have already arrived. We recommend checking your mailbox daily until it arrives.
If you haven’t received it yet, don’t contact the Social Security office. The SSA recommends you wait until January before contacting it about the notice.

How To Get A Social Security Award Letter
A Social Security Administration award letter confirms that you have been approved for benefits. Unsurprisingly, these letters are sometimes also referred to as benefit letters. These are usually sent to people who have applied for disability coverage, as well as other Social Security programs. Applying for a Social Security award letter is relatively straightforward, but getting the process right really matters. Consider working with a financial advisor on retirement planning.
Why You Need An Award Letter
You might be wondering why you would ever need a copy of your award. After all, you should know how much your benefit payments are each month, right? There are several reasons why you might need a copy of your award letter, and here are a few. One of the most common reasons you need a copy of your award letter is for proof of income when applying for a loan or mortgage. Social Security beneficiaries frequently need a copy of their letter to prove their benefit amount to a bank or other lending institution. Just like a bank might request copies of a paystub from working individuals, those who are retired will usually need to present a copy of their award letter.
Next, you might need your Medicare award letter to serve as proof of your medical insurance coverage. Your doctor or health care provider might need to see this letter before performing certain services to make sure they are covered under insurance. Lastly, those who are receiving SSI benefits might need a copy of their award letter to prove their eligibility for other assistance programs. Remember that SSI beneficiaries automatically qualify for many other programs, like housing assistance, food stamps, and others. Their SSI award letter is enough documentation to qualify them for these other programs.

a heading that always includes the agency name usually the name of the Social Security program, and the type of notice. For example:
Social Security AdministrationSupplemental Security IncomeNotice of Change in Payment
Social Securitys internet link, toll-free telephone number and the address for your local field office.
WHY DO WE SEND YOU A NOTICE?
Notices are one of the main ways that we communicate with the public. We use notices to tell you our decisions, inform you of your rights and responsibilities, and describe what you can do if you disagree with our decisions.
We also send notices that may ask you to call or come into the office, or to send information or documents.
WHEN DO WE SEND YOU A NOTICE?
Whenever we send you a notice, it is because there is something you should know or do about your claim, benefit status or benefit amount. We send you a notice before we make a change to your benefit amount or eligibility. We will send a notice whenever we must tell you about activity on your case.
For example, if you receive Supplemental Security Income and changes in your living arrangement, other income, or resources affect your benefit amount, you will receive a notice each time your benefit amount changes.

What Is A Social Security Card
Your Social Security card is an important piece of identification. You’ll need one to get a job, collect Social Security, or receive other government benefits.
When you apply for a Social Security number , the Social Security Administration will assign you a nine-digit number. This is the same number that is printed on the Social Security card that SSA will issue you. If you change your name, you will need to get a corrected card.
What Is In Your Social Security Benefits Letter
First of all, your Social Security benefits letter is the official document that confirms youve qualified for SSDI benefits. Additionally, the letter states approval or denial of your application for disability benefits. This is important in itself because the Social Security Administration does not make phone calls, send emails, or send text messages in order to notify applicants of their application status.
In addition to confirming that youve been approved to begin receiving benefits, your award letter will also provide some other information that you will want to know, including the following:
- Approved medical conditions.
- Frequency of expected medical reviews.
- The Social Security Administration determination on any expected, not expected, or possible medical improvement.
- The date that you are eligible to receive benefits.
- The date that you will begin receiving your benefit payments.
- The exact amount each benefit payment will be.
- The amount of money that you will receive in back payments.
- The distribution date of your back payments.
Keep in mind that the date your eligibility begins will typically be a lot earlier than the date that you receive your first payment. In fact, this date is often earlier than the date that youve received your letter. You cant receive payment until five months following the official onset date of your disability.

You may want to appeal the decision if you dont think that the benefit amount that youve been approved for is substantial enough. If you do decide to appeal the decision, dont worry about having it affect your benefits. You will continue to receive monthly benefits as stated in your award letter during the appeal process. Any adjustments wont take effect until the announcement of a final decision.
