Today, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly highlighted his offices continued work to successfully assist Arizona seniors and their families navigate issues they encountered with the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid , receiving their Social Security and Medicare. Senator Kelly has remained focused on helping Arizona seniors cut through bureaucracy and get access to the benefits they have earned for a healthy and secure retirement.

Im working to make sure Arizona seniors get the Social Security and Medicare benefits theyve earned through a lifetime of hard work, said Senator Kelly. Seniors shouldnt have to worry their benefits wont be there to help them pay their bills, get their prescription medications or cover their next doctors appointment. My team and I are here to help, and I hope that any Arizonans will reach out when they need help cutting through the red tape theyre facing with the federal government.

    Read testimonials from constituents below:

In September, Irene Prall received a notice from the Social Security Administration that her income increased, which was not true. She later found out that someone had fraudulently filed under her Social Security number for a large sum, which led Social Security to cut her payments in half. They then asked her to prove the filing was incorrect, even though she is 87, hasnt filed taxes in two decades, and lives solely on social security.

    What Is Social Security

Elderly man thrown out of office by security guard

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.
