Social Security Monthly Payment Increase The Largest In 40 Years

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Social Security beneficiaries can expect an unusually large increase in their monthly payments.

The Social Security Administration has adjusted the cost of living by 8.7%. This is the biggest increase in forty years and administration representatives have said its to help combat inflation.

Charo Boyd with the Indiana Social Security Administration told 14 News that the boost will start finding its way to peoples pockets next in January.

Her colleague Jack Myers said the increase was implemented to make sure people who cant work and rely on those checks wont be priced out of their own expenses.

Its there to make sure that inflation doesnt erode purchasing power, he said.

He said the 8.7% figure comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Each month, the Bureau puts out their Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers or CPI-W.

The Social Security Administration uses those figures each year to set benefits.

That average CPI-W from the third quarter of 2021 increased 8.7% in the third quarter of 2022, Myers said.

He said its important to keep in mind that these increases are across the board.

You dont have to start collecting your benefits now to benefit from this cost of living adjustment, he explained.

That means no matter when you start or started collecting, your monthly payments will be adjusted 8.7% higher than they would have been last year.

    What Is Social Security

Social Security Benefits Increase in 2023

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.

What Are The Ssdi Work Requirements

In addition to meeting the SSA definition of disability, you must have worked long enough and recently enough to qualify for disability benefits. SSA work credits are based on your total yearly wages or self-employment income. You can earn up to four credits each year.

The amount needed for work credit changes from year to year. In 2019, for example, you earned one credit for each $1,360 in wages or self-employment income. When youve earned $5,440, youve earned your four credits for the year.

The number of work credits you need to qualify for SSA disability benefits depends on your age when you become disabled. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
