How Does Work Affect My Social Security Retirement Payments

It is possible to work and receive social security retirement benefits at the same time. However, if you are younger than full retirement age and you continue to work, your social security benefit will be reduced.

That doesnt mean that you lose that money in the long run. After all, you earned your social security benefit by working and paying taxes for many years. You will receive that benefit eventually, in the form of an increased monthly retirement benefit, when you reach full retirement age.

More information on how work affects social security benefits is available in this handbook from the Social Security Administration.

How Does Social Security Determine Disability For Ptsd

Can someone get Social Security Disability and also work?

There are a couple ways an individual may qualify specifically for disability for PTSD.

The first is to satisfy the Social Security Administration listing in its Blue Book of qualifying conditions. PTSD is in the Mental Disorders section, technically under section 12.15 Trauma- and stressor-related disorders.

To meet this requirement, an applicant must show both A and B, or both A and C.

A) The patient can show medical documentation for all the following:

  • Exposure to actual threatened death, violence, or serious injury.
  • Additional involuntary re-experiencing of the traumatic event.
  • Avoidance of external reminders of the incident.
  • Mood and behavioral disturbances.
  • Increases in exaggerated reactions and arousal responses.

And the applicant must show:

B) Extreme limitation of one, or marked limitation of two of the following:

  • Understanding, remembering, or applying information.
  • Interacting with others.
  • Concentrating, persisting, or staying on schedule.
  • Adapting or managing oneself.

Or, the applicant must satisfy part C:

C) Their condition is serious and persistent, including medical proof of its existence for at least two years as well as:

  • Proof of living in a highly protected or supervised situation or undergoing intense therapy.
  • Evidence that there is marginal adjustment. This means the applicant has minimal capacity to adapt to new demands that arent already part of their daily life.

Is Your Condition Found In The List Of Disabling Conditions

For each of the major body systems, we maintain a list of medical conditions we consider severe enough to prevent a person from doing SGA. If your condition is not on the list, we must decide if it is as severe as a medical condition that is on the list. If it is, we will find that you have a qualifying disability. If it is not, we then go to Step 4.

We have two initiatives designed to expedite our processing of new disability claims:

  • Compassionate Allowances: Certain cases that usually qualify for disability can be allowed as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. Examples include acute leukemia, Lou Gehrigs disease , and pancreatic cancer.
  • Quick Disability Determinations: We use sophisticated computer screening to identify cases with a high probability of allowance.

Can You Get Ssi And Social Security Retirement At The Same Time

What is my Social Security?

Seniors and people with disabilities may qualify for financial assistance under several federal programs. Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income are two of the most popular programs of the Social Security Administration .

The main difference between SSDI and SSI is that SSDI determines eligibility based on employment history and disability credits. On the other hand, SSI is based on age, disability, and limited income and resources.

Moreover, SSI recipients are also automatically covered by Medicaid in most states. After receiving disability payments for 24 months, a person with SSDI automatically qualifies for Medicare.

What Must A Person Submit To Prove They Meet The Ssas Disability Requirements

An applicant will need to show medical records which may include doctors notes, treatment records, and prescriptions for medications. A mental health professional will also need to submit a Mental Residual Functional Capacity form attesting to the patients condition.

Additionally, it may help to include third party statements from former bosses, colleagues, and family membersor friends. These letters should focus on their observations and interactions with the affected individual more than medical diagnoses. Remember, the goal of all of this is being able to show how PTSD renders the applicant incapable of working.

Your Medical Condition Improves

You are only eligible to continue receiving benefits so long as you are disabled. If your condition improves, benefits may stop.

After youre approved for Social Security Disability, the Social Security Administration periodically reviews your case. This is called a Continuing Disability Review. In this review, the SSA determines whether or not you are still disabledand whether or not youll get SSDI benefits.

Depending on your age and your particular condition, the SSA may review your case once every three to seven years. However, the SSA may review your case sooner in certain circumstances. For example, a review might happen if they find that you have returned to work, if a new treatment for your condition is introduced, or if evidence suggests that youve experienced medical improvement.

If the SSA decides to stop your benefits on the basis of medical improvement, all is not lost: youre allowed to appeal their decision if you dont agree.
