What Is Social Security

Photo Gallery

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.

How Are Social Security Benefits Taxed

Stolen guns, vehicles, social security cards seized by police in N. Portland

This is a question I get asked a lot because many retirees really dont know that part of their Social Security benefit is subject to federal taxation. They also often want to know how much tax will be taken out and how this tax rate is determined.

On our federal 1040 tax form, line 5a asks us to enter our total Social Security earnings, including your spouses, if applicable. The amount you enter on line 5a comes from box 5 on your SSA-1099 form, and is not the total amount deposited in our bank account for the year, which is usually less due to the automatic deductions Social Security takes out for things like Medicare Part B premiums and perhaps tax withholdings. Line 5b then asks us to enter a percentage of 5a that represents that part of the total Social Security benefit that must be included as taxable income. This will vary between zero and 85 percent. So how is this calculated?

Step 1: Add the rest of your gross income shown on your tax return to half of the full Social Security amount entered on line 5a, and add any non-taxed municipal bond interest shown on line 2a of your tax return.

If this amount is less than $25,000 for singles or less than $32,000 for married people filing jointly, your rate will be zero percent and none of our households Social Security benefits will be taxes.

What Kind Of Documentation Do I Need To Bring

The documentation that you need to bring along varies depending on what it is you are trying to do. At a minimum, you will need some form of identification. This might be a driver’s license, U.S. Passport, or state-issued non-driver’s identification card. You might also need your current Social Security card and even your birth certificate. It is usually best to take everything you can even if you are not sure whether you need it. It is better to carry documentation that is not needed than to arrive without the proper documentation.

Since 1988 More Than $500000 In Benefits Paid To Accounts

    Joshua Valencia

Tacoma An Olalla, Washington man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 25 months in prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for his decades-long theft of his missing brothers identity and benefits, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman. Chris Harvey Sayler, 74, began fraudulently collecting his missing brothers Social Security Disability benefits since at least 1998. Over the last twenty years, those benefits total more than $388,000. At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Robert J. Bryan said, This is a sad case for all concerned including the public. Its a crime against all the citizen taxpayers in the country. Judge Bryan noted that but for Saylers age, health and military service, he would have faced a much longer sentence.

Over the course of this investigation, the defendant has made conflicting statements about when he last saw his brother who was reported missing in 1989, said Acting U.S. Attorney Gorman. Our hope was that the investigation could shed light on what happened to Jarvis Sayler. While that has not happened, we are able to hold his brother accountable for stealing benefits from government programs that are designed to help the most needy in our community.

In court today Sayler said, Im sorry that I caused all this problem. I shouldnt have done it.

The Clark County Sheriffs Office remains interested in hearing from anyone who has information on Jarvis Sayler and his disappearance.
