What Are The Ssdi Work Requirements

Traverse City Disability Attorneys

In addition to meeting the SSA definition of disability, you must have worked long enough and recently enough to qualify for disability benefits. SSA work credits are based on your total yearly wages or self-employment income. You can earn up to four credits each year.

The amount needed for work credit changes from year to year. In 2019, for example, you earned one credit for each $1,360 in wages or self-employment income. When youve earned $5,440, youve earned your four credits for the year.

The number of work credits you need to qualify for SSA disability benefits depends on your age when you become disabled. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

Bring A List Of Questions

It can be intimidating to sit down with a Claims Specialist when you have limited time and are unfamiliar with the SSA application process. For this reason, everyone should bring a list of questions.

Give some thought to what you dont understand about the disability or retirement process, and write it down. There is no such thing as a dumb question!

Your goal is to make sure everything gets answered. Some examples of good questions to ask if you are applying for disability:

  • Should I apply for SSI or SSDI? Whats the difference?
  • Where do I apply?
  • How long will it take for me to find out the decision?
  • What medical information will I need?
  • What information do I need to show my work history?
  • What are work credits?
  • What documents will I need to prove my income?
  • What documents will I need to prove my resources?

Social Security Offices Will Reopen For First Time Since March 2020

The U.S. Social Security Administration’s main offices

Social Security offices have been closed nationwide since March 17, 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they will reopen Thursday, April 7.

The Social Security Administration announced the news on Monday, April 4, via a statement from Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi.

Given that many of the people we serve have health vulnerabilities, and consistent with our union agreements, we are continuing to require certain safety measures including masking, physical distancing, and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms, Kijakazi said in the statement. We will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

Kijakazi recommends people use the SSAs online services at ssa.gov/onlineservices or call toll free at 1-800-772-1213 instead of going into offices, if possible. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can call the TTY number at 1-800-325-0778.

For those wanting to go to the offices, appointments arent required but are strongly encouraged. They can be made online or via the phone number above.

Offices tend to be busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week and early in the month, Kijakazi said.

Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.
