Alison Carey, who lives in Greene County and is the sister of singer Mariah Carey, was trying to get her Social Security benefits reinstated after her payments dropped to $30 a month from $794. After the Times Union reported on her struggle, the agency contacted her to say they would restore her benefits starting in December.

Alison Carey may not want a lot for Christmas, but she just received an early Thanksgiving gift her restored Social Security Administration benefits.

The older sister of chart-topping singer Mariah Carey told the Times Union on Thursday that she was thrilled to learn that the SSA corrected its error and will pay her hundreds of dollars it had incorrectly cut under the mistaken belief she was still in a medical facility.

With the help of a friend, advocate David Baker, the 60-year-old sibling of the Grammy Award-winning artist said she hoped to possibly now spend Thanksgiving with her 20-year-old daughter.

It makes me very happy, Carey said in a phone interview.

A native of Huntington, Long Island, Carey lives in Greene County, where her mailing address was listed as Athens. In 2015 on Long Island, she fell victim to a home invasion a baseball bat-wielding intruder struck her in the head. Carey suffered a brain injury and experiences short-term memory loss. She has struggled over the years, including being homeless.
