    What Is Social Security

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.

Iowa Delegation Urges Social Security Administration To Address Staffing Shortages

DES MOINES Today, Iowas Congressional delegation, led by U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne , urged the Social Security Administration to address staffing shortages in order to ensure quality service for Iowa seniors. Reps. Axne, Abby Finkenauer and Dave Loebsack sent a letter to Social Security Administration Commissioner Andrew Saul requesting information about how the agency plans to address the growing needs of Iowas aging population given their decreasing resources and staffing shortages.

Iowa is particularly vulnerable given that 14.9 percent of Iowans are over the age of 65, which is the fourth highest percentage of seniors in the nation. By 2022, an additional 80 million Americans will enter their retirement years in that same period, SSA is expected to have 21,000 employees retire. We are concerned about the quality of service SSA will be able to provide to millions of additional beneficiaries with these staff departures and office closures, the Representatives wrote.

Specifically, the Represetatives asked SSA to provide information regarding:

  • How is the SSA planning to provide service to the increasing number of baby boomers filing for disability and retirement?
  • How will the SSA hire, train, and retain adequate staff?
  • Additionally, if the SSA will expand online services in response to these problems, how does the agency plan to implement these programs?
  • Full text of the letter is available here and below.
